Anna Diljá Sigurðardóttir (b. 1993, Iceland) is a design researcher specializing in communication and information design. With an interest in geopolitics, earth sciences, and cartography, her work investigates how to translate scientific data and journalistic topics into a comprehensive multi-perspective story. Using various medias such as graphical narrative, moving image and sculptural work she focuses on creating an approachable method for understanding and reflecting on the unseen information around us.Anna Diljá Sigurðardóttir graduated with cum laude from the bachelor program Food non Food at Design Academy Eindhoven in 2019. In the past years, she has gained various work experiences with research-driven studios Quadrature and Tomás Saraceno in Germany, tutoring and lecturing at Design Academy Eindhoven, the Iceland University of the Arts and University of Iceland as well as collaborating with scientific institutes in the Netherlands, Iceland and England (Meteorological Office, Institute of Earth Sciences, Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, NIOZ mining research, Wageningen University, British telecommunication, Subcom LLC, TeleGeography and more). She is currently working as an independent researcher in Iceland, specialising in communication and information design, while also tutoring at the MA new enviroments department and BA product design at Iceland University of the Arts.

>

These interests manifest in works such as: The graduation project from 2019 (ongoing), ‘The Rare Metal Age’, where she collaborated with scientists from the Royal Institute for Sea Research in the Netherlands, to show the urgent subject of mining in the deep sea and the future resources. In 2015 with her first design project ‘Hofsjökull‘ she translated the rapid melting of glaciers in Iceland into a informatic product, where she collaborated with the Nordic project Climate and Energy (the institute of Earth Science and the Icelandic Meteorological office by using datasets and reflecting on the mathematical models. In 2019, she was nominated for the René Smeeth Award for her project ‘Earthly Delights’ that explores the materiality of the element Sulphur and its image in the course of history. In 2020, Anna and her part-time collaborator Ellen Pearson received a research grant for the project ‘Beauty and the Beast’ which is a study on invasive species and floral hazards with a case study on Lupine Nootkatensis. In late 2020, Anna exhibited the work ’Terabytes per second’ at the GEO-design SAND exhibition that was shown at Van Abbemuseum in the Netherlands. The project looks into the infrastructure and materiality of the global communication network, where she collaborated with Subcom LLC a leader in defining the undersea cable industry as well as British telecommunication, FARICE, Nextrom, and TeleGeography. In 2021 she was invited to collaborate with the Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences department on a research project to explore ways to mediate the importance of Peatlands, in the global landscape, and their deep history in our culture and origins. In 2020-2022, she and designer Romain Laval hosted workshop series called ‘What is Water‘ at the interdisciplinary course at Icelandic University of the Arts. The workshop is a theoretical and experimental laboratory placing the students as active agents for imagining ‘what is water and what can water be?’. In 2023 she and Gudrun Havsteen-Mikkelsen founded Radio Arctic an online radio platform for discussion on Arctic matters merging climate data and geopolitics. Collaborating with experts, scientists, journalists, creatives, and more, we produce live broadcasted discussions and podcasts. Through the means of working with open-source data from Arctic weather stations, the radio envisions the Arctic future forecast. In early 2024, Anna was published in OR3 Troubled Waters by Odious Haus. For OR3, it retreat to the coolness of underground caves, tidal pools and reservoir tanks. Troubled Waters is a tribute to the damp, the dank and the wet— a titanium trove dredged up from the deep.

'Trivet' based on the mathematical model of Hofsjökull. Years, 2014 ∼ 2150 ∼ 2200 ∼ 2250 ∼ 2300

Excerpt from the Publication HH

Hofsjökull, The Trivet, reflects on the results from a mathematical model of Hofsjökull which is Iceland‘s third-largest glacier, close to 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) high. The contour lines of the trivet show the transformation of the glacier until the year 2300. Assuming that air temperatures continue to rise at a rate of 3°C every 100 years.

A collaboration in with scientists at the Nordic project Climate and Energy (CE), the Institute of Earth Sciences and the Meteorological office in Iceland. The project visualised the database scientists have researched by translating the information and making it accessible to the public. When the trivet is dismantled, it demonstrates the area of the glacier that will be lost during each period. Showing the threat and the forceful change of climate change.

'Sea of plastic' Poniente Almeriense / 2017
Visual Essay, exerpt from Publication.

The creation of “plastic sea” of greenhouses has become one of the most territorial transformations in recent decades on a global scale. In Almeria, this began with the governmental action of colonization, and the successful application of artificial ground in the 1970s. Almeria produces about 3.5 million tons of fruits and vegetables annually to fill European supermarkets in more than 31,000 hectares (78,000 acres) of greenhouses. The visual essay travels through the area, throughout the history of battle and growth of Poniente Almeriense.

EARTHLY DELIGHTS 2019/ (ongoing)
Machine using two elements, water and pure Sulphur.
Sculptures, variable dimensions.Triptych, traditional engraving and Sulphur inlaying techniques.

Earthly Delights is a study on Sulphur and its image in the course of history. The project exhibits the industrial and geological cycles of the rather underestimated element, that has been a valuable commodity and integral component of the world's economy.

A series of machine-made sculptures show the passing of time, through an accelerated recreation of a slow natural process. Through a set of repeatable processes, Sulphur is shaped and solidified in water. However, its appearance can never be fully controlled. This leaves each sculpture as a unique piece, exposing sulphur in its, rarely seen, pure form.

“..Sulphur in cultural history is often tied to ideas of hell, alchemy and mysticism, where it is associated with fire due to similar characteristics; and yet, sulphur is essential to sustain all forms of life on earth.”

THE RARE METAL AGE / 2019 Installation, including a visual documentary and Publication TRMA.
(3D renderings, footage from ROV deep sea mining vessel and laserscanned landscapes).

The Rare Metal Age is an investigation into deep sea mining, the importance of metals and our future resources. It explores the challenges and complexities that lie ahead and allows us a closer look into the natural elements that shape a significant share of our material world.
The film 'visual essay' follows a new metal resource that has been hidden in the depths of the Oceans. It analyses the repeated patterns of history; a complex interplay of geo-politics, the economy, and the ecosystems. The interest in deep-sea mining is the result of both the growing demands for metals and the continuous depletion of land deposits of minerals. The scope of our dependence on these materials and metals will show that our inventions and technology, as well as our economic and climate security, will come at a cost.

On display is the polymetallic nodule, a metal resource that was collected in 2019 at the research aera at the Clarion-Clipperton fracture zone in the Pacific Ocean where mining and explorations in the deep sea is starting (deep sea mining).

The work was made in collaboration with scientists and marine biologists at NIOZ, the Royal Institute for Sea Research in the Netherlands, where the deep sea mining industry is studied and environmental impact assessed.

The seabed mining world map exhibits the exploration zones, areas of potential economic interest and areas of nodule occurrences around the globe. These nodules contain desirable metals and are found in deep seas that often sit on top of delicate sediments. The demand for such metals has skyrocketed in proportion to their increasing importance in our daily lives, the increasing demand for green energy sources, and the declining availability of them on land. These conditions have renewed the interest of large corporations in deep-sea mining in areas that include territories outside of the jurisdiction of states.

The map illustrates the scale of this pending deep sea mining industry in the marine areas beyond national jurisdiction, commonly called the high seas, those areas of the ocean for which no one nation has sole responsibility for management. In all, they make up 40 percent of the surface of our planet, comprising 64 percent of the surface of the oceans and nearly 95 percent of its volume. These areas are home to significant biodiversity, including unique species and unknown species. Disruption of the seabed by deepsea mining will damage ecosystems, disrupting the natural process of carbon sequestration and thus leading to rising global temperatures. The aim of this project is to shed light on this industry and the importance of the ocean, for the well-being of the planet and humanity now and in the future.

Series of electron micrographs show the topology and zoom into the diverse elemental construction in the polymetallic nodule. Images by Siavash Maraghechi, material scientist at the Eindhoven University of Technology.
